In Asigra’s white paper titled: “What you need to know about cloud backup: your guide to cost, security, and flexibility” they broke it down into three main sections. The questions we discussed so far in the recent posts were part of “Section A: Exploring the cloud.” Today, we start “Section B: Understanding security with cloud backups.”
The first question posed in Section B is “How can I ensure my availability requirements are being met when my company data is being stored offsite in a cloud?” Great question! Whenever you outsource a service to another organization, this is an important question that should be asked, especially in this situation when your company is still liable for the data security and it can significantly impact your business continuity.
According to Asigra, one safeguard is to keep a local copy of your most recent backups. You should also make sure that your service provider has multiple data centers in geographically dispersed locations in case a natural disaster or power outage occurs in a certain region of the country. It is also important to request copies of your service provider’s Disaster Recovery Plan and Business Continuity Plan.
Your data and systems are on the line and so too is the future of your organization. You need to make sure you ask the right questions when selecting a service provider.
