One area that is sometimes forgotten by busy IT professionals when implementing high availability and data recovery solutions is ancillary systems and applications. It is not uncommon that they are overlooked. Your ancillary systems may not be of core importance to your business, but they are essential to successful business operations and competitive advantage.
Assuming you only have to account for business-critical core applications in your high-availability plan is a common mistake that can cost you more money in the long run. Your company does not and cannot function on core operations alone. What happens when you fail over to a high-availability environment that includes only your core processes? You don’t have access to data stored in remote databases, email or EDI systems, and thus, you don’t have full access to the information you need to run your business. While that information can be restored over time, this is time you may not have, using resources that may not be available. A more cost-effective approach is one that invests up front to protect all your business data wherever it resides.
Make sure you dot all your “i’s” and cross all your “t’s”. Forgetting or purposely excluding certain applications or systems can put your business at risk.
