Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, oh my! We hear all the social media terms buzzing around us and often are not sure where to go first. As a business professional, my suggestion is to start with LinkedIn. Setting up a LinkedIn profile, which is essentially a glorified online resume, is pretty easy to figure out and it is FREE. LinkedIn walks you through the process. Once your profile is complete, then you can start “linking” to your professional colleagues. You will be amazed at the connections you will make, from people you knew in your past lives to potential customers or clients and even prospective employers.
Sharlyn Lauby wrote an article this week on Mashable.com titled “7 Ways to Get More Out of LinkedIn.” She provides practical tips to take your LinkedIn profile to the next level and leverage the tool to reap maximum benefit. In the article, Lauby suggests including a photo avatar in your profile, how to build your network of connections, using your status updates to your advantage, obtaining worthwhile recommendations, and much, much more.
Once you check out Lauby’s article, go to LinkedIn, update your profile and follow her tips, and make sure you join the DSC LinkedIn Network and connect with other technology industry professionals.
